Mexico City Tour Historical Centre

City Tour
An interesting location to build a capital city: next to an active volcano and on top of a swamp, causing Mexico City´s centre to sink a few millimetres each year! Little did the Spanish Conquistadors know, this Aztec City of Tenochtitlan would become the conglomerate it is today, with over 22 million inhabitants.
Hernan Cortez and his men rode their horses into an extremely well organized town with temples, marketplaces, plazas and aqueducts, bath houses, floating gardens and even a zoo. Remnants of Moctezuma´s empire are now slowly being discovered and exposed to the public. Right next to the Metropolitan Cathedral one has a great panoramic view of the excavations of the Temple dedicated to the Aztec Gods.
Our guide will collect you from your hotel/ airport and on foot we explore the most important buildings of the historical centre. Apart from the Aztec temple and Cathedral, a highlight is a visit to the National Palace. Inside are some of the most intriguing murals of Diego Riviera, depicting the story of Mexico before and during colonial times. We walk southwards towards the elegant Palace of the Fine arts, passing interesting architectural highlights such as the house of Tiles and the 19 century Post Office. After this time for a well deserved meal at a very typical Mexican restaurant.

Xochimilco Floating Gardens

City Tour
Also called the Venice of Mexico, the neighbourhood of Xochimilco in the southern part of the city is famous for its canals, which are left from what was an extensive lake and canal system that connected most of the settlements of the Valley of Mexico. We will explore part of the canal system, along with artificial islands called chinampas riding a very colourful gondola-like boat. A lovely typical lunch can be served on the boat, as we move along the canal, where mariachi bands play their tunes, and boats pass to sell you drinks and other artefacts, really good fun! This canal and chinampa system, as a vestige of the area’s pre-Hispanic past, has made Xochimilco a World Heritage Site.

Teotihuacan, Pyramids of the Sun and Moon

City Tour
An hour outside the Capital City in the Valley of Mexico lies the Archaeological site of Teotihuacan. Huge Pyramid shaped temple buildings stand along the Avenue of the Dead, aligned with even more temples and squares decorated with the finest stone structures. At its zenith around 500AD, it was probably the largest city of the continent with an estimated population of 125000. The ritual complex has some of the most vibrant murals inside its temples. We will take plenty of time to explore the site, with a chance to climb the many temple steps for a magnificent view. Right near the site is a good chance to learn about the use of the different types of cacti. We can try the agave-based drink called ´Pulque´, or perhaps you like a sip of its stronger brother tequila, or who knows a cactus margarita, as an appetizer for your typical Mexican lunch. After this tour, we return to the city or for layover tours to the airport.

Frida Kahlo Museum and Coyoacan

City Tour
What seems to be a town inside the city located in the southwest of Mexico City, Coyoacan has always been a counterculture hotbed. This is where Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera lived, a few blocks away from Leon Trotsky (their houses are now the Frida Kahlo Museum and the Leon Trotsky Museum, respectively).
The tranquil residential area, with parks, squares, and cobblestone streets, is now a favourite spot for the bohemian set. We will walk around and explore the area, and we will, of course, take our time to visit the famous Frida Kahlo museum. Also called ´the Blue House´ this former house and workplace of the famous artist couple gives you a great insight into Frida´s life.
