Also, Omoa is an interesting historical site with its fortress to protect from pirates in colonial times.

Inland, near to the Guatemalan border lies the pretty village of Copan Ruinas, home to one of the most beautiful Archaeological sites in the Mayan World. These ornate ruins are a must see whether you are into Archaeology or not, the art displayed that was sculptured over 1200 years ago is amazingly well preserved. Copan also is the birthplace of the Botanical gardens and Bird sanctuary of Macaw Mountain, who are responsible for the reintegration of the Scarlet Macaw in the valley of Copan. We recommend a couple of days in Copan Ruinas, to explore the valley taking a jeep ride to the thermal springs, finished off with a privately cooked dinner & wine. Copan has great opportunities for bird watching, canopy tours, coffee tours, horse riding and so on.  From Copan, it is possible to visit Guatemala or El Salvador.
