We begin the day with breakfast at the beach and a visit to the archaeological site of Tulum. We then head to the nature reserve of Sian Kaan, an azure-coloured, idyllic maze of waterways constructed in Mayan times, which can be explored floating leisurely! A truly unique experience!
We continue to Bacalar, the lagoon of seven colours, getting up early to enjoy birds and other wildlife announce the sunrise. We then climb the 18th-century fortress of Bacalar. Built to defend against the British, it is now the museum of pirates.
Leaving the Riviera Maya behind, we head eastward to Campeche State, visiting the archeological site of Becan in Xpuijil, and the huge city of Calakmul, now only populated by a wealth of wildlife.
The recently discovered Mayan settlement of Balamku is only partly excavated and shows us a magnificent stucco frieze with figures of reptiles, serpents and jaguars. Driving along the Mexican gulf coast, a wealth of water birds can be seen, and you have the opportunity to take a dip before enjoying a tasty, freshly caught lunch. The city of Campeche will be explored on foot, where it is possible to climb the walls that once protected the city from ransacking pirates!
Famous not only for its bread, the town of Pomuch has strong traditions during Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebrations. We also enter a real Mayan house and try the original Pibil chicken, prepared in an underground stone oven. And the chocolate at the chocolate museum makes for an exceptional dessert!
The area of Uxmal boasts some fantastic birdwatching opportunities early in the day, followed by a visit to the ruins of the ancient Mayan city of Uxmal.
Time to explore the shops of the elegant white city of Merida, followed by a tour of the Yucatan Peninsula limestone plain. Packed with sinkholes (Cenotes), its crystal-clear waters make for a uniquely refreshing dip!
The archaeological site of Chichen Itza is one of the Seven New Wonders of the World! This city receives vast numbers of visitors, which is why we stay nearby to explore the site before the crowds come in! We also visit the handsome red-coloured city of Valladolid before returning to the Riviera Maya Cancun for your return flight or a beach extension.
