Overview
Belize the melting pot of races: A lovely sweet creole tongue of the local Belizeans, combined with sweet reggae sounds make this tiny country a very special little tropical haven between its more Latino neighbouring countries, Mexico and Guatemala.
Snorkel or dive from the cays of San Pedro or Caye Caulker, in the beautiful nature reserve of Hol Chan, or the famous Blue Hole, one of the world seven natural wonders. Turtles, sharks, spotted eagle rays, and many little colourful fish swim alongside you while exploring what is world´s second largest barrier reef. Take a day tour sailing trip along the many cays/islands, having your dinner served right from the ocean onto your plate, or even spend a couple of days taking a true break from it all.
More of the beaten track, you can visit the less talked about Mayan sites with huge structures, such as Xunantunich, Altun Ha, Lamanai. Perhaps go to Caracol which in fact used to be one of the main players in the Mayan Classic Period! It is only a few hours from Belize City to the very lush and evergreen Cayo, where many more Mayan secrets lie buried.
If you literally want to go deeper into the Mayan world, visit the cave system with an underground Mayan religious burial chamber named Actun Tunichil Muknal, a truly amazing experience.
Belize can be visited on its own or in combination with other countries such as Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.
